The Web based interactive platform enables planners, policy makers government, non-governmental organizations, researchers and even students to easily understand the current socio economic status of all the local units in province seven, view the datasets and download data , maps and charts for different socio economic indicators. The concept of open data is one of several steps initiated by Far western commission to bring data driven decision making once the provincial government begins it work.
Far West Region of Nepal which falls under province number seven under the new division of Nepal is probably the least developed region throughout Nepal. Statistically, Far west region has the lowest GDP among all the development regions and the value for many socio economic and development indicators are the lowest in this region among all the seven states. This project is an initiation to open up this information and let other governments and people understand the current socio economic status of the region .
A socio economic atlas contains a series of thematic maps containing the information about social and economic condition of certain place or area. Moreover, an interactive web map is a digital version of a socio economic atlas where users can interact with the map and view information regarding particular indicator throughout the local units as per their interest. And according to Nepal’s new provincial set up , the atlas would be powered with new local units.
Although, a hard copy atlas map book was also an output of the project, the entire project focused largely on building the interactive platform which could effectively reflect the socio economic and other aspect of this region. This portal can also be used for effective data extraction as per demand.Such data can be mined and used for informed decision making, making the portal an efficient planning tool.
Major socio economic indicators were calculated at district , municipality and rural municipality level. Then the data were grouped thematically under different chapters. The project followed a heterogeneous data integration approach where data from multiple sources : Survey Department, Central Bureau of Statistics as well as Far West Development Commission were integrated to prepare a thematic database on a minute level.
Following are some of the key features of the digital application.
- Socio economic datasets for major Indicators :Population dynamics, Education, Agriculture, Gender Aspect, Economic activity etc. visualized over maps and charts
- Socio economic indicators grouped and mapped under three layers: District Wise, Municipalities and Rural Municipality Wise.
- View statistical datasets representing major socio economic indicators over Graphs Charts and Tables.
- Interactive map elements like zooming, panning, layer switching as basic tools for users to interact over the web maps.
- Allow users to download datasets on open data format.
We believe this platform will be one of several digital tool that would help the provincial government to better plan and implement their new projects, deal with new kind of programs and opportunities backed by data driven decisions.
