Digital Resource Mapping and Municipal Profile Preparation of Kageswori Manahara Municipality is a project consisting of two major components: A Resource Map that shows all different natural resources and urban infrastructures as map datasets and a profile that shows in detail the socio-economic aspects.

The Resource Maps consists of specific details such as distinct administrative boundaries within the local units, existing infrastructures like transportation routes, health centers, education facilities, drinking water supply, heritage sites, river networks,, existing land use pattern and other important features as well. A Municipality Profile is a true reflection of the actual picture of the area in terms of its history, geography, socio-economic condition, income status, economy, tourism potentials and various other social aspects.

A participatory approach was followed to identify the project parameters. We finalized the major point of interests (POI) to be surveyed, socio-economic indicators and parameters to be included in the Municipal profile by organizing a discussion session with the municipal officers and ward representatives. This helped us develop a standard template/ form and idea regarding what datasets and information are crucial to the local Municipal authority. The form template was later digitized by developing a mobile app for data collection.

The surveyors, mostly local youths from respective wards collected both spatial and attribute data associated with major points of interests: roads, schools, heritage sites, office buildings and financial organizations using those created forms. The discussion sessions with local representatives and experts helped us to collect first-hand information on the history of the area, its potential in terms of tourism and agriculture, the socio-economic status and local marketplace.

Following are some of the major activities we performed under this project.

  • Review and Study the major socio-economic indicators published by the National Census Department.
  • Visit different government offices and collect datasets for respective sectors : eg: Industries datasets from Department of Industries, List of NGOs, INGOs from Social Welfare Council etc.
  • Organize interaction sessions at individual ward levels to collect first-hand datasets from the local experts
  • Prepare thematic resource maps and Municipal profile as per the standards set by the government.
  • Organize a municipal level workshop and incorporate their suggestions to prepare a detailed profile book of the Municipality.

Though we collected the datasets of major point of interest via ground survey using digital tools, we had to rely on the secondary datasets from National Census Department and corresponding offices for datasets of Industries, Agriculture, Forests department, local businesses etc.Further enhancement of the project can be a detailed household survey followed by a digital mapping of the entire area based on remote sensing techniques which would help the local unit to precisely estimate the resources they hold and take smarter decisions backed by actual datasets.
